We are a small tribe providing shelter and sustenance, literal and spiritual, to seekers in the sanctuary cities of Seattle and Portland, and on a small island in the Salish Sea. We observe holidays and celebrate special occasions throughout the year.Shalom Cascadiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07401821330911576307noreply@blogger.comBlogger11125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1163858383886022718.post-8098850263029093392023-06-01T10:44:00.000-07:002023-06-01T10:44:42.081-07:00Bringing Home The Torah
The events of the last couple of days have shaken my lack of faith 😀😀😀 and I want to share the story of how Shalom Cascadia hopes to bring an ancient scroll back to our urban kibbutz in Portland, Oregon. We have an opening for a residential fellow and one of my jobs as the house imma is to find the right folks to live with us. We have a great crew at present with three Hebrew learners but no fluent Hebrew speakers. Housing demand is high, maybe someone wants to lead our conversation cafes as part of their contribution to our collective.

To Craigslist I went. My search turned up, shockingly, not a person but a safer Magillah Esther. Listed at MALL 205! This, I thought, had to be a scam or a serial poster pretending to be a dozen different cities or maybe a forlorn antiquities dealer. Somewhere in the back of my brain, I remembered a tradition of giving a scroll of Esther as a wedding present and I never fail to take an opportunity to remind my boyfriend that they haven't proposed yet so I asked them if they wanted to go take a look with me.

"Of course! Adventure!" Still thinking that there was no way the Magillah was in our neighborhood I messaged the seller and asked if we could come over 'right now' and look at it. The immediacy was weed out the scammers and serial posters I figured. The seller wrote back right away and said he was at the beach but we could stop by tomorrow. Amazing.

Three of us went from the kibbutz. My best friend who is OTD (shout out to Israeli frumkeit) can be counted on for these sorts of adventures and my religion major boyfriend and me, the most meshuaga mom you'll ever meet.

At a small house on the shoulder of Mount Tabor we met a retired pastor who rather sheepishly explained that he would try to be respectful but was bound to say the wrong thing and assured us that he had Jewish friends and had studied Hebrew in seminary. He showed us the scroll of Esther which was real and unremarkable. American. Steady pen work. In good shape.

"Do you want to see the Torah?" he asked. We did. Oh. We did.

He brought it out apologetically. It was in the box from Israel. Covered with customs declarations and inspection stickers. Wrapped in . . . black plastic bags. We gingerly pulled it from the packaging and unrolled the ancient pages.

That feeling. That feeling of forever. The feeling of standing at the Kotel. The feeling of making kiddush. The feeling of connecting with ancestors going back as far as time. That feeling.

The Torah is from Morocco. It dates to 900 CE. It is written on deerskin. It has been inspected by Israeli authorities and determined to be in too good a shape for burial and too worn to be certified kosher. It is beautiful. One aitz chayim has been replaced. The other is . . . shockingly. Original. You can feel the ornamentation.

We raised almost enough money in 24 hours to buy it. I am confident enough that today I'm going to go make a down payment on behalf of Shalom Cascadia and sign a bill of sale. If most of the pledges come through we will be able to walk the Torah to the Kibbutz library next week.

The library. That's right. Our library. The Torah is holy and this Torah will be accessible. One hundred years ago, American Jews were bringing out the Torah on Friday night (shocking!!) we'll do things like that. Accessible. Transgressive. This is a queer Torah. This is a Cascadian Torah scribed by someone who never imagined our shores. This will be your Torah. Please help make it our Torah.

https://e5812e85647e6a4dc6e9afe126ad9b2b.blogspot.com/p/make-donation.html

Fortishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06233843705307412292noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1163858383886022718.post-31097445411782384712023-04-20T19:48:00.003-07:002023-04-20T19:48:40.317-07:00Support Shalom Cascadia and our Monthly Minyan with Mary Jane
Support us with your purchase of a t-shirt or hoodie!

Wolff_Kithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10549176586376759719noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1163858383886022718.post-33900152850740199522023-01-27T12:31:00.000-08:002023-01-27T12:31:06.171-08:00Urban Kibbutz Residential Fellow | Community Engager Opening--Spring 2023--Green Room

It’s about riding the waves of life when you have no idea what is to come. Not knowing the future means the possibilities — of greatness or of sorrow — are endless. There’s no way of knowing what is to come, so we just have to hang tight. It’s about how the only thing we can control is ourselves and how we respond to a situation. The money will go toward our purchases of higher welfare eggs.
We made the commitment a few months ago to buy eggs only from farms and suppliers that treat their chickens humanely. Since my challah recipe uses five eggs, it means a lot to me to know that I'm baking with high quality ingredients and serving cruelty-free bread on Shabbat every week.
In a series of meetings in January and February, the Board and the Tikkun Olam Committee had some uncharacteristically serious conversations. At the core, the reason why Shalom Cascadia does the things we do is that it brings us great joy. But what does "joy" feel like in these times? Being Jewish in a time when anti-semitism is increasingly tolerated has become a radical act. Others also face discrimination and other challenges just for being who they are - members of the Queer community, people of color, trans folks, immigrants. So many people we host at Shalom Cascadia belong to more than one of these identities.

What can we do? We've decided to focus on the core of our mission: Shelter and Sustenance, and Inclusion.

During our Passover Seder in April, we pledged to support sanctuary for immigrants facing deportation as part of the Sanctuary Movement, a campaign of faith organizations spearheaded by the Unitarian Universalists - for we once fled slavery and sought help in an unknown land.

Our Sukkot observances this fall will focus on raising awareness of houselessness in Cascadia. During this holiday of abundance, we as Jewish people "welcome the stranger" and offer food and hospitality to any who are in need. While we can't literally house more people, we hope to highlight the moral imperative to shelter all humans, and perhaps bring some spiritual energy into the conversation.

And we've renewed our commitment to hosting a small Kiddish every Friday at 6, open to members, friends, guests, and the curious - bread for all as we welcome Shabbat.

As for the Airbnb rooms, which so amazingly provide us both with guests to host and enjoy and with funding to subsidize our programming, we have decided to offer a small discount to those folks who may have a harder time finding an inclusive and joyous place to stay. Much has been written in the last year about discrimination on Airbnb, such as this article in Quartz, and we have certainly noticed in our years of hosting that we have had a disproportionate number of Queer, Trans, and POC guests. Stories of people having their reservation requests denied, or worse, canceled for no apparent reason, have spurred us to offer support this group of guests (and their allies of course!). Whatever their identity, we have truly been blessed to host the kindest and most considerate humans, and we are glad to be able to give back in a small way.

It seems that so much has changed in the last year, and so quickly. We find ourselves fighting for rights that we thought we could take for granted, or maybe didn't even think too much about at all. For our progressive congregation, our way of dealing with the shifting political winds is to get back to basics. Food, shelter, and spiritual connection, open and accessible to all.Shalom Cascadiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07401821330911576307noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1163858383886022718.post-66304180570804604922017-04-25T20:57:00.000-07:002017-04-25T20:57:30.461-07:00Higher Welfare EggsShalom Cascadia has made a commitment to using only "higher welfare" eggs.

We use so many eggs in our weekly challah baking as well as various other noshing opportunities that we're thrilled that Hazon has issued this challenge to Jewish organizations. It could really make a difference in the lives of chickens and the health of humans and the earth.
Hazon poses the question, is this a Jewish issue?

We are mandated by Jewish tradition to have compassion for all creatures, especially those who rely exclusively on humans for proper mental and physical care. Committing to the sourcing of better welfare eggs is a small, yet significant step towards fulfilling this mandate and treading more humanely on our earth.
For guidance, we look to the mitzvah of tza’ar ba’alei chayim, a rabbinic mandate and moral imperative that forbids causing animals unnecessary suffering. Perpetuating the mistreatment of farmed animals like these laying hens surely violates the value of compassion expressed in myriad stories and teachings throughout Jewish text and tradition.

The time is ripe for consumers to encourage egg producers to adopt more humane practices. Shalom Cascadia will do our part by supporting production systems in which hens can walk, spread their wings, lay eggs in nesting spaces, dust bathe, and perform other natural behaviors, and are fed a healthy diet.

We are a small tribe providing shelter and sustenance — literal and spiritual — to seekers in the sanctuary city of Portland, Oregon and in the woods near Seattle, Washington. Every Friday we gather for our signature event, Cocktail Kiddush, on the porch at Beit Shlomo, and we observe holidays and celebrate special occasions throughout the year.
